About Dr Brake

Dr Maria Brake is a Canadian-trained Otolaryngologist-Head and Neck Surgeon. She became a medical doctor in 2008 after her medical school at Memorial University of Newfoundland. She then went to do a 5-year surgical residency at Dalhousie University, and qualified as a surgeon in 2013. Her final year of training was through the University of Toronto with a fellowship in laryngology (voice and airway) & thyroid/parathyroid surgery at St Michael's Hospital in downtown Toronto.

She currently is a full-time staff surgeon at Kelowna General Hospital. Prior to moving to Kelowna in 2016, she did a locum here in 2014 and "got hooked". She did also work at the Queensway Carleton Hospital in Ottawa 2014 - 2016.

Her MSP practice interests are laryngology (voice, airway and swallowing), pediatric ENT, facial plastics and reconstruction (skin lesions, skin cancers, functional nasal reconstruction). She has also worked with local SLP, Staci Cooper, to develop a multi-disciplinary outpatient voice clinic and the Okanagan Voice Clinic. (These clinics were put on hold in March 2020 for an undetermined amount of time.)

She also has experience with transgendered individuals who are transitioning, and understands the special needs and options for patients wishing to demonstrate a more masculine or feminine appearance.

She also owns and operates Omorfia Medical Aesthetics - which is a business separate to her medical practice.

Dr Brake is originally from Newfoundland, and as much as she misses being close to her east coast family and friends, she much prefers the Kelowna winters.  She loves that she can enjoy fresh powder at Big White with her family and there may not be any snow on her lawn!  She loves being close to the water and enjoys the easy access to outdoor activities, and to BC wine country. She is passionate about support local business and charities.

Dr Brake has a strong commitment to ongoing life-long training to further refine her skill-set and outcomes. She continues to maintain her medical education throughout conferences, surgical courses and independent learning. She also participates and had led other quality and patient experience improvement projects at Kelowna General Hospital.

To see Dr Brake for MSP related issues, you will likely need a referral from another physician or nurse practitioner. Please contact the office if you are unsure.
